Torch

A torch is a handheld device that produces a controlled, high-temperature flame used for heating bangers and nails to vaporization temperatures. It's fueled by butane or propane and is the traditional heating method for dabbing.

Key features:

  • Butane or propane fuel
  • Produces concentrated, high-temperature flame
  • Adjustable flame size (most models)
  • Refillable tanks with universal adapter
  • Safety lock prevents accidental ignition

Fuel type affects performance slightly. Butane burns cleaner and is more commonly available in small canisters, making it ideal for torch refills. Propane burns hotter and is typically less expensive in bulk, though canister options are more limited. Either works fine for dabbing — the choice often comes down to what's readily available and personal preference.

Torch size ranges from small, pocket-sized units to larger, more powerful tabletop models. Smaller torches heat bangers more slowly but are portable and use fuel more efficiently. Larger torches heat quickly and maintain a consistent flame output, but they're less portable and consume fuel more quickly. For home use, a medium-sized torch balances power and efficiency well.

Flame control matters for precision heating. Single-flame torches produce a single, pointed flame, offering good control and fuel efficiency. Dual or triple-flame torches heat faster but use more fuel. Adjustable torches allow you to dial in the flame size for various situations. Most people prefer some adjustability to match the heat intensity to the banger size and desired temperature.

Using your torch: Refill your torch in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Most torches use universal butane adapters. To fill, hold the torch upside down, press the butane canister nozzle into the fill port, and fill until you see liquid butane leak and vent from the fill port, indicating it’s full.

. Don't overfill. Let the torch sit for a few minutes after filling before use. When heating your banger, aim the flame at the bottom and sides of the bucket, moving it around to ensure even heating. Heat until the quartz glows slightly, then remove the flame and let it cool to your target temperature. Store torches away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep extra butane canisters on hand — running out mid-session is frustrating.
