Kief Catcher / Box

A kief catcher is the bottom chamber of a multi-piece grinder, separated from the main collection chamber by a fine mesh screen. It collects the tiny, potent trichomes that fall off flower during grinding — concentrated material you can use to enhance sessions.

Key features:

  • Fine mesh screen separates kief from ground flower
  • Bottom chamber collects accumulated trichomes
  • Gradually builds up concentrated material over time
  • Typically part of four-piece grinder designs
  • Small scraper is often included for collection

The mesh screen does the work. As you grind the flower in the upper chamber, the trichomes (tiny crystalline structures containing concentrated compounds) break off and fall through the screen. The screen is fine enough that only the smallest particles pass through — mostly trichomes with minimal plant material. The ground flower stays in the main collection chamber while the kief accumulates separately below.

Kief potency is significantly higher than that of the flower it came from, as you're collecting mostly trichomes with very little plant matter. The color ranges from light tan to golden, depending on the quality of the flower and the amount of plant material that makes it through the screen. Greener kief indicates more plant matter mixed in, while purer golden kief suggests better separation. Mesh size (often 80-120 microns in common grinders) influences color and purity.

Collection happens gradually. You won't see much after a single grind, but over weeks or months of regular grinding, you'll accumulate a noticeable amount. The rate depends on how much you grind and the trichome richness of your flower. Some people speed up the collection process by placing a small coin in the collection chamber above the screen — shaking the grinder knocks more kief through.

Using your kief catcher: Let kief accumulate naturally through regular grinding. When you've collected enough (how much is enough depends on your preferences), use the included scraper or a small tool to gather it. You can sprinkle kief on top of bowls for enhanced potency, add it to joints or blunts, press it into hash, or use it in various other ways. Store collected kief in a small, airtight container if you plan to save it. Clean the mesh screen periodically with isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush — residue buildup clogs the screen, reducing kief collection efficiency. Avoid scraping the mesh aggressively; screens can stretch or warp. Some screens are replaceable if they become too clogged or damaged.
