Dab/Dabbing

Dabbing is a method of consuming concentrates by applying them to a heated surface for instant vaporization. It's called "dabbing" because you use a small amount (a dab) at a time — concentrate is potent enough that a little goes a long way.

Key features:

  • Instant vaporization on heated surfaces
  • Higher potency than traditional methods
  • Preserves terpene profiles with proper technique
  • Requires specific equipment (rig, banger, torch)
  • Temperature control is crucial for flavor and efficiency

The basic process: heat your banger (usually quartz) with a torch until it glows, let it cool to your target temperature, apply a small amount of concentrate with a dab tool, then place a carb cap on top while you inhale. The concentrate vaporizes immediately on contact with the hot surface, creating smooth vapor that's cooled by your rig's water chamber.

Temperature makes all the difference. Low-temp dabs (450-550°F) preserve terpenes and deliver incredibly flavorful vapor with smooth effects. You'll wait longer for the banger to cool after heating, but the flavor payoff is worth it. High-temp dabs (600-750°F) vaporize everything instantly with bigger clouds and more immediate effects, although you sacrifice some flavor and smoothness.

Size matters more than you'd think when you're starting out. A dab the size of a grain of rice is often plenty — concentrates are three to four times more potent than flower. You can always take another dab, but you can't un-dab. Start small and work up to find your preferred amount.

Building your dab setup: You need a dab rig (the water pipe), a banger (the heated quartz bucket that attaches to your rig), a torch (butane or propane for heating), a dab tool (for handling and applying concentrates), and a carb cap (to trap heat and regulate airflow). Many people add a timer to dial in consistent temperatures — heat for X seconds, cool for Y seconds creates repeatable results. Terp pearls enhance heat distribution in your banger. An e-nail replaces the torch with electronic temperature control, making it ideal for frequent dabbing. Concentrate containers (such as silicone or glass jars) help keep your material fresh between sessions.
